FAST SUMMARY

The Characters are psychiatrists of a very strange kind: they get into people's mind and try to help them by solving their problems from the inside. Nice, eh? But there is a catch: mess a bit too much with their psyche and you can end up dead, brain-dead, or having your patient in worse condition than before..

"Man doesn't lived into the world, he lives into his own world".

The Characters are called Psysicians, a blend of Psychiatrist and Physician. They are not really trained. They are guys like you ( yes, exactly as you indeed ), who get into a Patient's mind to cure his mental disorder. But they are not surgery. They get into the Patient's world, his perception of reality. The madder is the Patient, the more abnormal is his world. The objective of psysicians is to get this world the more "normal" possible.

If you have seen The Cell movie, you can imagine the difficulty ( The Cell show the beginning of the Doctor Chestel's Method which is now more effective ). If you have seen The Matrix movie, you can imagine what can happen in a Patient's mind ( this movie show how mental disorders evolve : psysicians have to work at the end of the movie ). The Game, eXistenZ, The Truman Show or some books of P.K.Dick can help you to imagine a mental universe.

For ease of expression, all references to characters and referees uses the masculine pronoun. This should in no way be interpreted as mental disorders are male specificity or excluding either female players or characters. For example, we are able to cure some cat disorders ( no data about mad cow available ).




THE UNIVERSE OF CHESTEL Up

The Universe of Chestel is the Intracos, the world of perception of reality. Everyone has a personnal, unique Intracos who reflect the real life but where fears and beliefs are real. For example : in the real life, a Patient fears red cars. In his Intracos, everything's normal except a serial killer haunted red car. Psysicians ( the trained person who want to cure the Patient by the Doctor Chestel's Method ) can destroy the haunted red car with bazooka and the Patient is cured.

- Oh, it's too easy. So Doctor Chestel is a basic role playing game for violent, anarchic repressed and frustrated guys?

But beware of consequences for his mind. In this example, the psysicians teach to the Patient to have a violent reaction in case of conflict with the feared red car. Suppose a fire brigade truck ( red...) hoot just before the Patient, he will tempt to destroy the red car in the real life...Not funny, isn'n it ?

If the Patient forgets than babies exist, babies don't exist in his Intracos. If the Patient believes in magic forces, magic forces work in his Intracos. If the Patient think than earth is a flat disk, earth is a flat disk in his Intracos. If Patient is sure than his wife wants to poison him, she wants to poison him in his Intracos.

Funny note about consequences : the Patient fears that his wife wants to poison him. The Psysicians cure the Patient's paranoïa. Two cases : his wife is innocent and everything's ok, or his wife really wants him to poison him and he is now unable to detect her killing attempt.





PLAYERS, MASK AND CHARACTERS Up

At the beginning of the game, characters are players as in real life ( same name, same knowledge, and same profession ). They work freely as Psysicians ( just when real players play Doctor Chestel's Method Role Playing Game, what a coincidence ! ). To preserve their mental integrity, they become a Mask in the Intracos.

The Mask is a creation of the psysician. When he get into the Intracos, an anonymous unknown man, inhabitant of the Intracos, become the Mask...more or less. If the original Mask is rock star and the Intracos has a medieval technology level, the Mask become temporary an troubadour...

One advantage of the Mask is his memory. After a short period of time ( as Game Master decision, often after the introductory scene ), Mask has natural knowledge of the Universe : where he lives, what are the laws, where eating and sleeping without risk, etc.

One other advantage is the psysician protection. If Mask decease, the mind player is not killed. The same Mask can be used in an other Intracos ( not in the same, except if the Patient believe in ghost and resurrection, or if you want him to believe in ).

RULES Up

Main rule : have fun. This rules intended to be easy to learn, quick to use and realistic in unrealistic world. If a rule is too complex or not applicable, forgot it and let Game Master decide.

Four 6-sides dices are needed. The result of a roll is always the sum of two dices, so it is a number between 2 and 12.

Level of difficulty : for each action, the Game Master gives a level of difficulty.

Impossible can be choose as a difficulty level and something impossible can be made ! This is a very important particularity of this game. A 12 is always special, and a basic result of 12 is always a final result of 12.

- But with two dices I can reach number two, and 2 is not in the chart above.

2 or less is also special. This result means a catastroph occurs ( as Game Master desire ). Note than you can roll 3 and obtain 2 as a final result if your skill is -1.


Attributes
( -2, -1, 0, +1, +2 ) : ( RELATIONS, MOVEMENT, LAW, EGO, for example ). They are fixed for the life of the Mask ( except in the case of trans.). The sum of all attributes is 0. A Mask can have at the most one -2. There is no limit to the number of +2 : one is recommended and two is difficult to play because a lot of other attributes must be negative. When Game Master indicate a level of difficulty, player roll dices, add two of them and this is the basic result.

Backgrounds
( +1D, +2D, +3D, etc ) ( arachnophobia, prefered weapon, beautiful long hair, old car ) : if you used a talent, you can reroll n dice where n is the level of your talent. If you have more than one talent usable, choose one. The worst basic result is forgotten and the new one take its place. When the mask is created, 1 dice can be credited to one talent. You can also have problem with negative effect ( -1D, -2D ) : reroll your n best dice. See with your referee for all initial problem. The result is the new basic result.

At this step, you have THE basic result.





Skills
( 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0, -1, -2, -3) : ( fight, art, evil, strength, for example ) they are not fixed and can evolve by experience ( as the Psysician want ) or by interaction with the Intracos ( as the Game Master desire ). At the beginning, you must put 10 points in each column, for example 5 and 5, or 5 and 6 and -1. The sum of each column is reported in the last line and represent the stength of the Mask world. Positive skill is insurance, negative skill is limit. "Grey" skill must be filled.

Skills modify the basic result. For example, for a basic result of 7

 If skill > 4 and skill > basic result, the result is equal to skill skill = 9 result = 9
 If skill > 4 and skill < or = basic result, the result is equal to basic result skill = 6 result = 7
 If skill = 0 ( nothing ), result = basic result

At this step, you have THE result.


Status :
status is very variable. It symbolize your health ( and the health of your Universe...). There are two kind of status directly modifying the result.

Negative :

 minutes ( from 10 to 6 ) : if a result > to this limit ( except for a 12 result ), the final result is the upper limit
 hours ( from 3 to 7 ) : if a result < or = to this limit, a catastroph occurs ( as Game Master decide )

Positive :

 you can reroll one dice and uncheck the case by case checked as explain in "background"

At the beginning of the game, all status are cleared.

At this step, you have THE final result. This final result is used by the Game master to decide what happens to your mask.

Others status affect possibility of game : if you are K.O. or coma, you can't act. If you are dead, also, but definitively in this Intracos. If you are dying, wait one day to have a survival test.

If you suffer a "days effect", if you have a result < or equal at your day effect level, you perform your intended action but you suffer a new effect ( like hours effect, with the two dice of your result, the upper at minute effect and the lower at hours effect ). Example :you have a level 9 "days effect", you roll 5+3, you perform at 8 and suffers a 5 level minute wound and a 3 level hours wound.


Status evolution :
At the end of the "duration" of the effect ( so each minute, or hour or day or month ), make a roll test ( at Game Master choice level ). If you succed, you can uncheck the worst ( for you ) wound status into the "duration" effect columns ( you cure, very quickly for a single wound, it's more fun for your enemy ).

- I am dying. What can happend ? Every day ( at dawn traditionaly ), you make a strengh ( stamina ) test if you are alone, or a material ( servant ) test if you are assisted.


Effects and cumulative effects :
Effect class is the exception of the rule of the two dices sum. You used the two dices of the basic result ( after background influence ) but you multiply the dices, so you have an effect between 1 and 36. Use this number to calculate effect of a basic action, or the difference between this number if you want to evaluate a relative effect ( seduction against honour, weapon against armor, voluptuousness against self control, etc.).

Roll the number of dices ; affect the upper to the minute duration class,then the next upper to the hours class, etc. Example : you obtain a 25 effect result, you reroll 3 dices : 2, 5, 4. 5 is affected to minutes, 4 to hours and 2 to days. Check a cross in the corresponding case of the characters sheets.

- Hey, there is a cross in this case !

- Yes, the characters has soon suffered a similar effect. Add one to your dice result until you can check a new cross in an empty case. Cumulative effects are worst than single effects.

- And if I reach 7

- At 6, character is out of order. Game Master decides, because at this level, rules are not applicable. Don't forget the main rule and let your sadist Game Master have fun.

Effects can be of different nature : pain, bad luck, injurie, lack of money, bad reputation, bad smell, curse, disease, button on nose... They are all cumulative, because it's too funny.




ADVENTURES Up

Introduction : part one
The Players read the Patient file and learn the symtom of the mental desorder. The Game Master listen what players fear and prepares the next adventure ( because players never imagine the real problem of the Patient, Murphy's law consequence).


Introduction : part two
The Masks get down into the Intracos. They discover and experiment the mental disorders, without the remembrance of the Intacos law ( see § Players, Mask and Characters ). I remember an adventure where Masks are drinking on a meeting when they see a fly, apparently normal, but Patient fears insects. What can they do ? How follow it ( because it flies during players thinking ). How catch it ? And what can happend when you hurt an insect in this kind of Intracos ?


Investigation :
The Masks need to understand what happend in this world. They have to see the Patient ( as he imagines himself ) and his surrounding. They have to identify the two main forces, conservative and altering one. They often split in two groups, the good ( who joins conservative forces and gain luck ) and the bad ( who joins altering forces and lose luck ).

Plan :
The Players think about action to eliminate disorders, to normalize the Intracos. They have to show a key event to a large number of people or to the patient representation to induce an alteration of his mental perception of reality.


Action :
The Masks tempt to do the plan, the Game Master adds some events ( a curious guy ( starring "Columbo" in "Mystery Movie" ) who see something wrong, a dog, smog, a lost friend with sentimental problems, a breakdown ). If you have ever seen "Mission : Impossible", you can imagine what can happend.

Resolution :
The Players leave their Masks and come back into reality. The Game Master explain what is cured ( or worst ) for the Patient and the Maks gain experience points ( as in all RPG ).
